Khmer Nation Youth Movement

<

The Khmer Nation Youth Movement is a de facto political wing of the Sam Rainsy Party, one of major opposition parties of Cambodia. Following the announcement on the establishment of the Khmer Nation Youth Movement at the 14 December 1997 extra-ordinary meeting of the Sam Rainsy Party, the Movement was created on 14 February 1998 at an extra-ordinary meeting chaired by Mr. Sam Rainsy, President of the Sam Rainsy Party (Former Khmer Nation Party).

The objectives of the Movement are to mobilize all young Cambodians to support the political platform of the Sam Rainsy Party, to motivate and instruct all Khmer youths to have genuine national conscience and the spirit of responsibility for nation's destiny, motherland, territorial integrity and people, to encourage energetic youths to fully accomplish their excellent ideas in terms of cleanliness, generosity, humanitarianism, and social justice, to urge and upgrade morality, verity, justice and dignity of all young Cambodians, to work and respect for the interests of all young Cambodians regardless of origin, place, political tendency and religion, to encourage and instruct students to bravely, democratically voice their opinion/ideas in contribution to national development and construction, and to encourage young people to initiate and push for a reform for modern education to meet the requirements of social economy of the country.

The key principles of the Movement are to promote liberal democracy and human rights in the country, to strongly support the 10-clause political platform of the Sam Rainsy Party, to educate and turn young Cambodians into real young liberals and democrats, and bring real liberal democrats to power to transform a nominal democratic Cambodia into a real democratic nation.

The activities and programs conducted by the Movement are to conduct some training courses on some specific skills, to hold public forums on youth issues, awareness of liberal democracy, and the importance of human rights in cities and provinces, to join every peaceful demonstration organized by the Sam Rainsy Party and/or some independent democratic youth organizations, to publish monthly bulletin relevant to youth issues and human rights abuse by the state authorities, to strengthen existing youth structures at all levels, and create more youth branches where needed and where the youth branches have not been formed yet, to tour electoral campaigns before the start of communal and national elections, to work as election observers, ballot-box guards and election staff for the Sam Rainsy Party during elections, and to conduct some social activities like cleaning national parks, growing trees, group excursion, digging canals, irrigating water into rice fields for needy farmers, and so on.
